Water Garden Plants

Water gardening can be fun for a lot of reasons.  The water gardener gets to see interesting plants growing, then blooming during the warm months, and finally is hands-on in the yearly task of dividing or cleaning up during fall and winter.  The water gardener enjoys getting his hands wet as well as dirty and playing of fish and water snails, which keep the pond in balance, is not uncommon; the fish feed the plants, the water snails eat the green algae.  Plants can cover large areas of water with their foliage, like water lilies, water hyacinths or water lettuce.  Bog plants give depth and an upright form to the pond.  Following is a list of water plants available at Sheridan Gardens.  If you cover at least 60-75% of the water surface with green plants, you should have clear water with little green algae.  Water plants should be planted in soil with little or no organic matter as the organic material encourages the growth of green moss in the water.

WaterliliesHARDY WATER LILIES:  A must for every pond.  Blooms year after year, floating on the surface of the water with large round leaves.  Opens in the morning and closes in the evening, each flower lasts 4-5 days.  Frost tolerant.  Available in Red, Pink, White, Yellow and Orange.  Feed with Water Lily Plant Tabs in spring and summer. Will grow in 18”-24” deep water.

TROPICAL WATER LILIES:  This spectacular lily produces the showiest of flowers on stems, many flowers per plant that last 4-5 days.  They are fragrant and the flowers are on stems above the water.  We carry just the day bloomers, however night bloomers may be found.  Colors in Blue, Purple and Pink.  These become dormant during the winter months, losing their leaves, to return to glory in the spring.  Feed with Water Lily Plant Tabs in spring and summer. Will grow in 18”-24” deep water.
