TRIP REPORT
By
Wendy Lugo, May 8, 2002
My
husband Jim and I, along with our two children, moved
to San Diego County two years ago. Since that time, we have had
the opportunity to see lots of great sights - The San Diego Zoo, The San
Diego Wild Animal Park, Balboa Park, and most of the beaches from the
southernmost tip of San Diego all the way up to North County. It
is ironic then, that in all of our jaunts, we missed a garden just MILES
from our home in Carlsbad!
Quail
Botanical Gardens is a wonderful
"day trip." It is the perfect place to take a packed
lunch and a loved one, (in this case, I was joined by my dad, Darrell,
step-mom Jackie, and daughter, Sheridan) and just enjoy the slower pace
of a beautiful garden. Quail Gardens has an interesting
focus. It focuses rare and endangered plant species. At the
gardens you can find all manner of unusual cycads, palms, and other
"rain forest" plants. You will also find beautiful water
gardens, and gorgeous, unusual blooming plants not commonly seen
in local gardens. You will enjoy plants that originate from the
Middle East, Central America, the Himilayas, the PanTropical Rain
Forest, and many other zones!
An interesting side note: Because Quail
Botanical Gardens enjoys a large variety of Bamboo, they are able to
assist a local project, feeding the Pandas at the San Diego Zoo from
their own garden grown bamboo!
Quail
Gardens, while not an "all day" trip, is a perfect place to
stop for a leisurely lunch or
a break when visiting the many sights of San Diego County and deserves
to be included in any San Diego County itinerary!. I enjoyed my
time at Quail Gardens with my family, and made some nice memories.
My daughter, Sheridan (almost 4) especially enjoyed the Bamboo groves,
and it was easy to see in her eyes that she was imagining that she was
in a "real" jungle! Aaah, to be a child again! I
enjoyed walking along the paths with Dad and Jackie, recounting memories
of past vacations, and special times at the nursery! I no longer
work for Sheridan Gardens as I have long since married and moved away,
except to put this Web Site together and keep it up to date, but I have
to say, plants are in my blood and serve as a constant reminder of where
I come from and who I am. I am a nurseryman's daughter, and for
the special connection I have to plants and flowers, I give thanks to my
dad!
Thank you Dad and Jackie for a special day!
