APPLES
ANNA APPLE - Large, light greenish-yellow skin with slight red blush. Sweet, slightly tart, crisp, creamy white flesh. Good choice for salads, pies, applesauce and eating fresh from the tree. Stores well. A remarkable low chilling selection from Israel especially suited for Southern California and low desert areas. Produces at an early age. Pollinizer recommended such as Dorsett Golden for better production. (200-300 hours) Ripens: Late June. Standard 15 ft.
BEVERLY HILLS APPLE - Long-time favorite summer apple for coastal So. California. Pale yellow, red blush or stripes. Medium size, slightly tart. Fresh/cooked. (300 hrs) Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
DORSETT GOLDEN APPLE - Medium to large. Yellow skin with orange-red blush. Firm, smooth, crisp flesh with sweet-tart flavor. Does well in very mild winter areas. Good pollinizer for Anna. (250 hours) Ripens: Mid-June to Early July. May be kept to 10 ft. with summer pruning.
EIN SHEMER APPLE - Large. Golden delicious type, with crisp, tart, good quality flesh. A very low chilling selection from Israel. Bears young and very productive. Self-fertile. (350 hours) Ripens: Mid-June to Early July, after Anna. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
FUJI, RED APPLE - Medium. Yellowish-green base with red blush over entire surface. Firm, crunchy, juicy, white flesh with excellent flavor. Stores well. Will take summer heat. (350-400 hrs.) Ripens: Early to Mid-September. Semi-Dwarf, 8-12 ft.
GALA APPLE - Medium. Conic to round shape. Golden yellow skin with reddish-orange blush. Flesh is firm, crisp, sweet and juicy with excellent flavor. Stores well. Will take summer heat. (500-600 hrs) Ripens: Late August to Early September, 3 1/2 wks before Red Delicious. Earlier in warmer valley climates. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft..
GORDON APPLE - Medium to large, round. Skin green overlaid with bright red. Firm, crisp, fine texture, juicy, sweet-tart, good flavored, white flesh. Good aroma. Excellent for fresh eating, cooking and baking. Very heavy production in mild winter areas (300-500 hrs). Ripens: Mid-August to Mid-October. Standard 15 ft. or Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft
GRANNY SMITH APPLE - Large. Skin bright green which is retained long after harvest. Flesh is firm, sweet. Good for eating, cooking and sauce. Does well in cold climates if adequate length of season. (400 hrs) Ripens: August to September. Standard 15 ft.+ and Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
PETTINGILL APPLE - Very low winter chilling requirement, about 100 hrs. Chance seedling discovered near Long Beach, California, introduced in 1949. Large fruit with red over green skin, ripening late September to mid-October in coastal Southern California climates. Crisp and juicy, with a balance of sugar and acid. Good keeper. Large, vigorous, productive tree. Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
APRICOTS
GOLD KIST APRICOT - Excellent backyard apricot for warm winter climates. Freestone. Very good quality. Heavy bearing. Early harvest, 3-4 weeks before Blenheim (Royal). (300 hrs) Self-fruitful.
KATY APRICOT - Large, all-purpose flavorful freestone. Tree-ripe fruit is sub acid (not tart). A favorite apricot for warm-winter climates. Early harvest. (400 hrs). Self fruitful. . Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft. Limited quantity.
BLENHEIM ROYAL APRICOT - Medium to large, oval. Yellow skin with orange cheeks. Flesh pale orange, juicy; sweet, delicious flavor. Valuable for fresh fruit, canning, and drying. (400-500 hrs.) Ripens: Late June to Early July. Dwarf 10-12 ft., Standard.
CHERRIES
ENGLISH MORELLO SOUR CHERRY - Late-ripening tart cherry for cooking, sometimes eaten fresh when fully ripe. Dark red to nearly black fruit with dark juice. Small, round-headed tree with drooping branches (easy to harvest). European origins obscure, introduced to America prior to 1862. 700 hrs. Self-fruitful.
LAPINS CHERRY - New, from Canada. Self-fruitful, dark red sweet cherry. Large, firm, good flavor. Similar to Van in color, Stella in shape. Sometimes sold as “Self-fertile Bing.” Ripens 4 days after Bing. 800 hours.
FIGS
BLACK JACK FIG - Deciduous, medium-sized, sweet fruit. Semi-dwarfed tree grows to 6'. Excellent for use in containers or as an espalier. Self-fertile.
BLACK MISSION FIG - Medium to large, pear shaped. Purplish-black colored skin. Flesh strawberry color and good flavor. Good for fresh or dried fruit. Long lived, large tree. Ranges from coast to inland heat. June 1st crop. 5 gallon size only. 12-15 ft.
BROWN TURKEY FIG - Medium to large, bell shaped. Purplish-brown skin with light strawberry flesh. Sweet, best eaten fresh. Large tree. Ranges from coast to inland heat. 5 gallon size. 12-15 ft.
WHITE KADOTA FIG - Medium. Lemon yellow skin. Amber flesh with few seeds. Good fresh, canning or drying. Fruit needs hot weather to ripen. 5 gallon size. 12-15 ft.
PETERS HONEY FIG - Greenish yellow skin. Amber flesh. Does well under coastal conditions if given hot exposure. 5 gallon size. 10-12 ft.
NECTARINES
ARCTIC STAR WHITE NECTARINE - Earliest to ripen of the new low acid, super-sweet white nectarines. Rave reviews in trial tastings. Beautiful dark red skin, snow-white semi-freestone flesh. Low winter chilling requirement, about 300 hrs. Self-fruitful.
DESERT DAWN NECTARINE - Proven heavy producer of delicious nectarines for warm winter western climates. Solid red skin, juicy yellow semi-freestone, rich flavor. Mid to late May. 250 hrs. Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
DESERT DELIGHT NECTARINE - Proven producer in warm winter climates, and highly recommended as an early season nectarine elsewhere. Large fruit with bright red skin, yellow flesh and delicious, rich, nectarine flavor. Harvest mid-June in Central Calif. 1-200 hrs. Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
FANTASIA NECTARINE - Very large freestone. Bright red with bright yellow under-color. Flesh yellow, firm, smooth textured, sweet, juicy and good quality. Bears well in warmer winter areas. Also frost tolerant. (500-600 hrs.) Ripens: Mid to Late July. 15 ft.+
GOLDMINE NECTARINE - Large. White skin with red blush. Juicy, sweet, white flesh, excellent flavor. Freestone. Good for home use. (400 hrs) Ripens: Early August. 15 ft.+
PANAMINT NECTARINE - Medium. Rich red skin. Golden flesh. Freestone. Heavy bearer in mild winter areas. (300 hrs) Ripens: Early to Mid-July. 15 ft+
DWARF NECTARINES
NECTAR BABE MINIATURE NECTARINE - Excellent quality fruit: mid-season yellow freestone with sweet, rich, delicious flavor. Heavy bearing 5-6 ft. tree. 500 hours. Pollinated by peach or nectarine.
PEACHES
DOUGHNUT WHITE PEACH (Stark Saturn) Also called Saucer or Peento Peach. Unique white-fleshed fruit with a sunken center (shaped like a doughnut). Sweet, with a mild flavor described by some as almond-like. Ripens late June/early July in Central Calif. Estimates chilling requirement, approx. 4-500 hours. Self-fruitful
GIANT BABCOCK PEACH - Large. Skin predominantly red. White flesh streaked outwardly from stone with shades of red. Sweet and juicy. (450 hrs) Ripens: July. Heavy bearer. 15 ft.+
BONITA PEACH - Medium to large yellow freestone with red blush. Sweet, sub acid, very flavorful. Proven variety for So. Calif., coast or inland. Late July. Chilling req. less than 400 hrs. Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
KIM ELBERTA PEACH - Large, usually elongated. Skin golden yellow, flushed with red where exposed to sun. Yellow flesh, very rich and sweet. California’s leading peach for all purposes. (800 hrs) Ripens: Late July. Semi-dwarf. 10-12 ft.
EVA’S PRIDE PEACH - Delicious, fine-flavored peach with very low-chilling requirement ripens 2-3 weeks before Mid-Pride. Medium to large-sized yellow freestone - also recommended as early season peach for moderate climates - harvest 3 weeks before July Elberta. (1-200 hrs.) Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
MID-PRIDE PEACH - Best yellow freestone for warm winter climates of So. Calif. Also recommended for Central California for its exceptional flavor and dessert quality. Mid-season. (250 hrs.) Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
RED BARON PEACH Flowering/fruiting. Large, juicy, firm, richly flavored yellow freestone fruit. Showy double red blossoms. Mid-July. Low chilling requirement, 250-300 hours. Self-fruitful.

EARLY RED - Deep purplish red or rose red. Very early and brilliant. 15-20 ft.
SATURN PEACH - Medium to large. Golden yellow skin. Excellent eating quality flesh. Freestone. Massive bloomer with large, double, pink blossoms with darker pink centers. (550 hrs.) Ripens: Mid-July.
PEARS
ASIAN PEAR SHINSEIKI - (Asian Pear) Medium, round. Yellow, thick, fairly smooth skin. White, sweet, mild, firm, slightly coarse, crisp, and juicy flesh. Good quality. Bears early in life. Semi self-fertile. (350-450 hrs.) Ripens: Late July through Mid-August. Stores extremely well, until March. 15 gal. To 20 ft.
PERSIMMON
FUYU PERSIMMON - (Imoto) Large, round, flattened. More “square” and flatter than Jiro. Reddish-brown skin. Smooth texture. Non-astringent. Ripens: November. 15-20 ft.
HACHIYA PERSIMMON - Very large, oblong with a rather short point. Skin bright orange-red covered with dark blotches. Largest and best cooking quality. Tree vigorous, upright and shapely. Astringent. Ripens: November. 15-20 ft.
POMEGRANATE
WONDERFUL POMEGRANATE - Extra large. Blushed red skin. Flesh rich, red color, juicy, with sharp flavor. Most well known. Shrub or tree to 20 ft. Ripens: September. 15-20 ft.
QUINCE
PLUMS
BURGUNDY PLUM - Medium. Reddish-purple skin. Flesh deep red, mellow, sweet. Small pit. Self-fertile red Japanese plum. Good for mile winter areas, yet cold hardy. (250-350 hrs.) Ripens: Early July, but keeps well on tree until Mid-August. Standard 15-20 ft. Semi-Dwarf 10-12 ft.
ELEPHANT HEART PLUM - Very large. Blood red skin. Red flesh, excellent flavor - one of the best. Freestone. Fast growing. Needs pollinizer: Beauty or Santa Rosa. (650 hrs) Ripens: August. 15-20 ft.
GREEN GAGE PLUM - (Jefferson Strain) Medium, round. Greenish-yellow skin. Very sweet, juicy flesh. Wide climatic range. Sets heavy, even in coastal So. Calif. Self-fertile. Ripens: July. 15-20 ft.
METHLEY PLUM - Juicy, sweet, red flesh, mild flavor. Reddish-purple skin. Harvest in June in Central Calif. Attractive tree, heavy bearing and vigorous. (250 hrs or less). Self-fruitful. Semi-Dwarf 8-12 ft.
SANTA ROSA PLUM - Most popular plum in California. Large, oval. Purplish-red skin with blue bloom. Firm flesh, yellow to dark red near skin; rich, pleasing tart flavor. Self-fertile. Ripens: Mid-June. Semi-Dwarf 10-12 ft.
SATSUMA PLUM - Large, nearly round. Dark, solid red skin. Firm, rather juicy, dark red flesh to pit. Needs pollinizer: Santa Rosa or Beauty. (300 hrs) Ripens: Late July to Early August. Semi-Dwarf 10-12 ft.
MULBERRY
PAKISTAN FRUITING MULBERRY - Long (3 inches), firm, red to black, sweet syncarpous (like a blackberry) fruit. Non-staining juice. Month-long early summer harvest. Fruit used fresh and for pies, jams and jellies. Large, vigorous, disease-resistant tree.
PERSIAN FRUITING MULBERRY - Morus nigra, Densely foliated tree to 25-30 ft. Large heart-shaped leaves. Large syncarpous (like a blackberry) fruit is juicy, dark red to black, good for jam. Large, juicy, dark red to black. 15 gallon. 30 ft.
WHITE RUSSIAN MULBERRY - Growth similar to Persian. Large white fruit with slight blush. Very sweet. 30-35 ft. mature. 15 gallon only.
NUTS
ALMOND ALL-IN-ONE - #1 almond for home orchards. Medium to large. Soft shelled with sweet good quality kernels. Its heavy production restricts growth so that some classify the tree as semi-dwarf to 15 ft. Self-fertile. (500 hrs.) Ripens: Late September to Early October. 15 gallon only. 10-15 ft.
WALNUT PLACENTIA - Medium. Smooth, thin, strong shell. Light tan meat fills shell. This variety does best in coastal areas and So. Calif. Not satisfactory in interior valleys. Ripens: Mid to Late September. 15 gallon only. 30 ft.
JUJUBE
JUJUBE - Shiny, reddish-brown, date-like fruit. Sweet apple flavor; when candied and dried, resembles dates. Needs hot summer for fruit to ripen, especially good in desert areas. Attractive shiny leaves. A small tree reaching 15-20 ft. in 15 yrs, maybe to 30 ft. with more time. Hardy to -10 degrees F. Ripens Fall.
