Albizia.jpg (56728 bytes)ALBIZIA JULIBRISSIN (Silk Tree)  Deciduous tree.  Unique flat top provides canopy effect.  Especially beautiful when viewed from above.  Light-sensitive leaves fold at night.  Pink, fluffy flowers on ferny-leafed branches in summer.  Rapid growth with ample water: wider spread arching habit.  Does best with high summer heat.

 BETULA JACQUEMONTII (White barked Birch)  A tall narrow tree with spectacular white bark growing about 2’ a year.  Somewhat resistant to leaf miners.  Fall yellow foliage.  Deciduous.

CHORISIA SPECIOSA (Floss silk tree)  Evergreen to briefly deciduous.  Heavy trunks, heavy spines.  Majestic Beauty variety is nearly thornless.  Young trunks are green, turning gray with age.  Leaves divided into leaflets.  Large, showy flowers resemble orchids; purplish-pink, rose, burgundy.  Grows 3-5’ per year, then slowly to 30-50ft.

CUPANIOPSIS ANACARDIOIDES (Carrotwood Tree) Evergreen native to Australia.  Slow to moderate growth to 40', with neat dark greeen leaves.  Very clean.  Rarely fruits and is considered to be a very low maintenance tree.  Nice, even upright habit.

EUCALYPTUS FICIFOLIA (Red Flowering Gum)  A round headed tree with a compact crown.  Leaves 7” long resembling shape and texture of rubber plant leaves.  Flowers in spectacular 1 ft. clusters in orange or light red.  Blooms all year peaking July through August. 

FICUS NITIDA (Indian laurel Fig)  Upright growing evergreen with dense foliage.  Admirably suited to formal shearing.  Clear, lustrous green leaves.  Useful as an indoor plant in good light.  Used as a screen or small tree.  Loves summer heat.

FICUS RUBIGINOSA (Rusty leaf Fig)  The tree in the center of Sheridan Gardens Sun Valley.  Broad-crowned evergreen with single or multiple trunks.  Dense foliage of 5” oval leaves, deep green above, rusty, wooly beneath.  Does well in sand.  Multi-trunked evergreen tree.

FRAXINUS VELUTINA ‘MODESTO (Modesto Ash)  Vigorous form of Arizona ash.  Medium green leaflets, glossier than the species, turn bright yellow in fall.  Resistant to oak root fungus.

KOELREUTERIA BIPINNATA (Chinese Flame Tree)  Deciduous tree with small yellow flowers in loose clusters in summer.  Leaves, 1-2’ long, divided into many oval leaflets, turning yellow briefly in December before dropping.  Long, orange-red or salmon-colored capsules are showy late summer and fall.  Slow to moderate growth.  

LIQUIDAMBAR STYRACIFLUA (Sweet Gum)  Narrow, erect, deciduous tree.  Lower limbs eventually spread to 20 ft.  Tolerates damp soil, resists oak root fungus.  BURGUNDY VARIETY turns deep purple-red and hang on late into winter.  FESTIVAL VARIETY turns yellow, peach, pink, orange and red in fall.  PALO ALTO VARIETY turn orange-red to bright red in the fall.

MAGNOLIA GRANDIFLORA ‘MAJESTIC BEAUTY' (Southern Magnolia)  Vigorous, dense-branching street or shade tree of broadly pyramidal form.  Most luxuriant of southern magnolias.  Leaves exceptionally large with very large 12”petals.   Very fragrant blooms, white, in May-July. 

MORUS ALBA (Fruitless Mulberry)  Umbrella shaped fast growing deciduous tree with large leaves.  Grows 3-4 ft per year to 25 ft, than slower.  May be hard pruned each year to control size.  Tolerates extreme heat .  Foliage drops after Thanksgiving.

PITTOSPORUM UNDULATE (Victorian Box)  Dense, single or multi-trunked , dome-shaped tree of great beauty.  Medium to dark green, glossy, wavy-edged leaves.  Fragrant, creamy white flowers in early spring.  Moderate growth to 15 ft, then slows to eventual 30-40 ft. with equal width.  EVERGREEN

ROBIN ‘PURPLE ROBE’  (Idaho flowering locust)  One of the showiest of locusts, this deciduous tree has 8” flowers of dark, magenta-rose.  Leaves are divided like feathers in roundish leaflets.  Moderately fast grower.

Weeping WillowSALIX BABYLONICA (Weeping Willow) Deciduous tree with pronounced weeping habit.  Greenish or brown branchlets.  Very fast growing, needs lots of water or it is susceptible to borers.  Invasive roots.

SCHINUS MOLLE (California Pepper)  Evergreen tree with fantastically gnarled trunks with knots and burls.  Bright green leaves.  Numerous tiny, yellowish, summer flowers give way to clusters of rose-colored berries in fall-winter.  Fast growing.  Tolerates dry soil conditions when established.

SOPHORA JAPONICA ‘REGENT’ (Japanese Pagoda Tree)  An exceptionally vigorous, deciduous tree spreading wider than it is tall.  Young wood is an attractive gray-green, flowers yellow-white July-September followed by pods.  Resistant to oak root fungus , makes a great lawn tree.
