Garden Chatter

 Spring 2008

Now is the time to start planting annuals like petunias, impatiens, zinnias, begonia and much more. Be sure to mix in perennials like nemesia, bacopa, African daisies and verbena. In about a month we should also have vinca in stock as well as outdoor hydrangeas.  Check out our Blooming Plants list for more ideas.

At Sheridan Gardens we have a large selection of vegetables and herbs to get your Spring garden going. Get herbs like basil, thyme, oregano and cilantro for your home cooking. With over a dozen different varieties of tomatoes we have just about everything you’re looking for. Plant your own peppers and eggplant; cucumbers and melons. We also have a large variety of organic seeds if you want to grow your veggies and herbs yourself.

Our fruit trees are well stocked, many already bearing fruit, you can see our selection in the The Fruit Tree section.

Also our roses are in bloom and looking great. Our wide selection of teas and floribunda roses make choosing the right rose a lot of fun. Check out our Rose List for more ideas.

Spring time is also when aphids and other pests hatch. Aphids are especially common around roses. The little green bugs can completely cover the rose buds and damage the bloom. There are a few ways in which to deal with the pest.

The most eco friendly way is by introducing to your garden the beneficial insect, Coccinellidae, the ladybug. They will eat the aphids and generally remain in your area until the infestation is gone before moving off. It is best to keep the ladybugs in their packaging cool (refrigerate them) and then at night open the package at the base of the afflicted rose allowing them to climb up and feed.

Another eco friendly tool is the Dr. Earth rose and flower Ready-to-Use spray. By using all natural oils this product provides the home gardener with a successful alterative to chemical insecticides.

For fast acting and effective results use the Green Light Rose Defense, available in RTU and concentrate for large infestations. This product is a three in one, an insecticide, fungicide and miticide that not only will solve the aphid problem but will also prevent and eliminate black spot and mildew.

As always we carry organic solutions to including fertilizers, weed and insect killers. We also have another great product by Dr. Earth, all organic, for your houseplants if they are afflicted with bugs.

With Earth Day around the corner we have a special going on with our beanpod candles. In celebration of Earth Day, Soy Basics has released three new special jars Earthy Bonsai Tree, Eucalyptus Lavender, and the always popular Earthly Embrace. At Sheridan Gardens if you purchase a 16oz. Earth Day fragrance during the entire month of April you will get a free 4.5oz of your choice.

Manufactured by Soy Basics beanpod candles are 100% American soy. These biodegradable, non-toxic, clean burning and great smelling candles make a great addition to any room. Visit www.beanpodcandle.com for more information.

As always, we are open seven days a week from 9:00 – 5:30 and Sunday until 5pm.

Happy gardening!
